Brake fluid is a special fluid that fills the pipes between the pedal and the wheels (Or Clutch ). Brake fluid is hydroscopic ( which means that over time it takes up water from the air). When the fluid gets up to 3% water in it, two things can happen:-
The manufacturers recommend that brake fluid is changed every 2 years. In practice this seldom happens. We test for moisture every time your car has a WOF or Service and report the result to you on the Preventative Maintenance Report sheet. Please also see the page on Repairs to the Braking system. The cost of changing the Brake (and/or Clutch) Fluid is listed on our Price Board. What we doInitially we suck the old contaminated fluid out of the reservoir and refill it with new fluid. A special device is then attached to the top of the reservoir to keep it full while we pump the new fluid through all the lines, wheel cylinders and / or callipers. The system is then checked to see that no air has entered the system during the process. |

Each Brake Wheel cylinder or Calliper Cylinder is Bled to remove the contaminated fluid and then to check that no air has entered the system.
