Tune ups & Fuel Ecconomy

A) Petrol Powered Vehicles
The way engines are controlled has changed dramatically since electronic control came in in the early 1990's. These are dealt with separately below and finally I talk about other factors that can improve economy.

1) Electronically controlled Engines (EFI)

The modern  engine is to a large extent self tuning, however if the sensors or delivery components stop working correctly or get clogged specialist servicing is required.
There are a few things that can be done to significantly improve fuel economy and engine performance.

Injector cleaning:

The primary job of an injector clean is to dissolve the carbon build up on the tips of the fuel injectors in the engine. This carbon interferes with the spray pattern that the injector should produce to gain maximum fuel efficiency and can also block up part of the nozzle.
The product also cleans out your whole fuel system. It dissolves dirt that is stuck in the various parts of the system and deposits them in the filter, which is why it is recommended to change the fuel filter after using it.

This is a fluid that is added to your fuel tank. The product we stock is only available to workshops and is not sold in Auto Stores as it needs to be used under controlled conditions. It is more effective than the similar product sold in Auto Stores.

Intake purging

There is a product which dissolves carbon build up in the whole intake system, which greatly
improves the mixture setting and cleans carbon from the valve chambers and can lead to fuel saving.

Spark Plugs

Your spark plugs should be changed every 40 000 km. A Spark plug in good working condition produces a good spark which efficiently ignites the fuel in the cylinder. Spark plugs aren’t expensive unless you have Platinum plugs, but these last 100 000km.

Ignition Timing

The ignition timing is extremely important for economy and performance of your engine as the spark is provided to the cylinder at exactly the right time to get the best burn possible.

2) Mechanically Controlled Engines

The Traditional mechanically controlled engine, which is carburetted and has points in the distributor, require more regular Tune-ups

Carburettor.

These need regular cleaning and setting. Servicing carburettors is a bit of an art and you need a specialy trained "old School" technician to do this successfully. We are very fortunate to have Glendon who is an expert in this field

Distributor Points

Points get burnt with their regular opening and closing, which effects the quality and timing of the spark. Points need regular attention.

Spark Plugs

Your spark plugs should be changed every 40 000 km. A Spark plug in good working condition produces a good spark which efficiently ignites the fuel in the cylinder and give you the best economy. Spark plugs aren’t expensive unless you have Platinum plugs, but these last 100 000km.

The ignition timing is extremely important for economy and performance of your engine as the spark is provided to the cylinder at exactly the right time to get the best burn possible.

B) Diesel Powered Vehicles

These have also evolved from mechanically controlled to Electronically controlled. The Sensors and delivery components also need to be kept in good order for them to operate efficiently. What I have said above for Injector Cleaning, Intake Purging and Timing also apply.

C) All Vehicles

Filters

Fuel and Air Filters are also very important for efficient operating of all engines. If you can't get the correct amount of Fuel or Air into an engine it will not operate correctly.

Wheel alignment

This makes the car easier to “push” down the road because the wheels are all pointing in the same direction. It also extends the life of your tyres as they are not “fighting” each other for the direction the want to go! Read More
